The combination of onions and spices makes it a flavorful treat. So, if you're looking for a quick and tasty snack option, Onion Pakoda/Bajji is definitely worth trying!

  • 1 cup Besan flour (gram flour)
  • 4 onions
  • 1-inch piece of ginger
  • 2 or 3 green chilies
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp jeera seeds (cumin seeds)
  • 1/2 tbsp crushed coriander seeds(optional)
  • Curry leaves 10-12
  • 2 tbsp rice flour
  • 1 or 2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)

  1. Chop the onions and set them aside.
  2. Finely chop the ginger, green chilies, and curry leaves, and keep them aside.
  3. Sprinkle some salt over the chopped onions in a bowl and mix well with your hands. This will help release the water from the onions.
  4. Add besan flour (gram flour) and rice flour to the bowl of onions and mix well until combined.
  5. Add chopped ginger, jeera seeds, crushed coriander seeds, curry leaves, and green chilies to the mixture. Mix everything together.
  6. Add red chili powder and mix well. The moisture from the onions should be enough to form a batter-like consistency, so no additional water is needed.
  7. Heat oil in a pan for frying.
  8. Take small portions of the mixture and shape them into small balls or patties.
  9. Drop the balls/patties into the hot oil and fry them until they turn golden brown. Fry them on a medium flame to ensure they are cooked through.
  10. Once they are cooked, remove them from the oil and drain the excess oil by placing them on a paper towel.
  11. Repeat the frying process with the remaining mixture.
  12. Serve the onion vadas hot and enjoy them with tea or coffee.

Please note that deep frying should be done with caution, and you may adjust the seasoning and spice levels according to your taste preferences.
